Every school is a bit different, but there are definitely universal concepts to keep in mind when getting started with your online education. Obviously your computer should be up to date, but it really does go beyond that. Some schools are using new formats for their online classes, and you need to be proficient in that new medium before the class starts, among other things. Here is your guide to making your journey into online learning just a bit simpler.
Your Computer, Your Crutch
If your computer bites the dust, you will be out of luck. It is the hub of your new environment, and the most integral part to everything you will be doing. The computer itself should not only be completely up to date, but it might be a good idea to have a tech support team handy just in case something goes wrong. A maintenance and protection plan might not be a bad idea either, since software isn't the only part of a computer that dies from time to time.
Make certain you have an anti-virus program installed, with regular scans scheduled. You will be doing a lot of research online, and the web is by no means a safe place. In addition, schedule your computer to tune-up itself with the defragmenter programs and cleanups, so that you don't have to deal with slowdowns – which can be a really big pain when you are just getting started.
Educate Yourself On The Education Format
Every school runs their classes differently, and sometimes even each class within a school can be vastly different from another. Some have started using virtual environments for teaching, and will have different ways that you turn in your work. Find out what programs your classes would use and get yourself familiar with them before getting started. Your goal is to learn what they have to teach when they are teaching it. Try not to waste your time trying to learn how to learn.
The message boards some classes use can be pretty confusing too. Even if you can't access the board before getting started with the class, you should be able to read the help files and manual. Once again, you should familiarize yourself with their systems to make your life a little easier. Last but not least, find out what your schedule will look like for the class, and work to schedule your life around it. It doesn't hurt to live by their schedule before getting started – practice makes perfect!
